Agroecology and Food Sovereignty – How can we sustainably transform the global food system?
Today’s global food system is not consistent with human rights and the democratic system. Transnational companies, landowners and other actors gain power over the global food system through international policies and land grabbing. As a consequent, producers’ and consumers’ influence and control over the food system is undermined. The negative consequences of today’s food production are similar around the world, including Sweden.
There are alternatives to today’s food system. Social movements around the world are working on gathering their proposals in a common agenda called Food Sovereignty. Food sovereignty focuses on the right to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods with the aspirations and needs of those who produce, distribute and consume food rather than the demands of markets and corporations.
Come and listen to researchers and small-scale farmers from four continents with experience from both national and international levels!
Pat Mooney, researcher and Executive Director for ETC Group, Canada. Right Livelihood Award laureate for his work on seeds and sustainable development.
Mary Sakala, Rural Women Assembly, Zambia. Small-scale farmer involved in the struggle for farmers’ rights to use native seeds.
Joel Holmdahl, board member of the Swedish farmer’s organization NOrdBruk. Small-scale farmer and teacher in agroecology.
María Canil, La Via Campesina, Guatemala. Small-scale farmer working with women’s rights and land rights.
