SUMMARY:Dec 9 & Jan 13: heARTh\, heART\, eARTh
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Art at the End of the World club!\nWhen: Every second Friday\, kl. 11.30-13.30 \nWhere: CEMUS Library\, Geocentrum\, Villavägen 16 \nNo registration needed \nMore information: contact enki.simmons[a]cemus.uu.se and anne.thompson[a]cemus.uu.se \n\nA fortnightly\, interdisciplinary gathering for anyone who wants to creatively explore themes around humans\, nature\, and the ties between us. Each month has an ecological theme to guide the two sessions. During the first session of each month we create art inspired by materials on the subject\, then the second session is an opportunity to share and respond to each other’s work. Any art medium (visual\, poetry\, film\, music etc) and any level of experience is welcome. You are also free to attend any session\, even if you have not come previously. \nThe theme for the next two sessions (9th Dec & 13th Jan) is on the interconnected concepts of hearth\, heart\, earth\, and the art imbedded within all of them.\nHEARTH: a fireplace we gather around\, the feeling of home\, a vital or creative centre\nHEART: the (emotional) centre of us\, the most vital part of something.\nEARTH: the planet on which we love\, the soil which gives us life and to which we will return. \nDuring these sessions we are keen to create a safe space for exploring what can be difficult subjects. Creating with and around nature can be a joyful and comforting experience\, yet we must be mindful of the times we live in. Therefore\, we aim to cultivate a supportive and emotionally open space where it is possible for people to express eco-grief and anxiety through creativity\, while leaving room for hope. Despite the title\, your work does not have to be about the end of the world! \nInspiration materials on the month’s theme will be available during the sessions and can also be found at the following links: \nInspirational materials on the theme: \n\nPhotography from Arno Rafael Minkkinnen\, who uses his body to become part of the earth around him.\nShort film\, Landing\, exploring our role in our earth home.\nConstruction art project Raising from Tessa Lynch with Jupiter Artland\nMother Earth: Works for Viola and Piano

SUMMARY:Jan 18: Re-emergence/ Emergency Walk in Alnarp
DESCRIPTION:Warm welcome to the third Re-emergence/Emergency Walk in Alnarp! Read more about the series of walks under the title “The Ecology of Life and Death: Learning about Radical Softness to Imagine a New Now” here.\nJanuary 18\, 2023\, 1:30-3:15 pm: We Will All Die! On Death and What it Can Teach Us\nWho: Everyone! Bring your neighbours\, colleagues\, friends to spark our academic bubble! \nWhere: The walk will start outside of Alnarp’s castle (front side)\, Slottsvägen 5\, where we will have a short introduction. We will then walk through Alnarpsparken\, discuss and share\, and conclude again at the castle. If fika is something that makes you feel safe and warm while walking\, feel free to bring just that. Also: We will meet in all weather\, so remember to dress accordingly and maybe bring an umbrella\, too. \nRegistration: No registration needed\, just be there a couple of minutes before we walk from Slottsvägen 5. \n  \n \nPicture by Stanford University Photo/Monica Lopez and Stuart Goodman: As human stem cells are known for surviving for about two weeks after we have died\, they show how we live on on this planet. \n  \nQuestions and framing\n \nHow are you today? I just came home from a walk. The sun is out on this January day. And what a mild sun it is. Balmy\, tender light on my pale face. I embrace it gratefully after many grey days that have left me feel sluggish. Have you seen the sun\, too? \nAt the same time\, I sense unease. I look and see the bulbs bud\, the twigs come into leaf. And I know\, I believe you know\, something is not as it used to be: the climate has changed\, seasons as we knew them do no longer exist\, the winter of our childhoods is dead. A particular time is dead\, from how predictions look like forever gone\, making us at the same time enter into an age of mass extinction. Death\, which especially Western societies have pushed to the margins of our lives\, comes closer\, reveals itself in a pandemic\, in loss\, grief\, mourning\, bereavement. \nAnd yet here we are\, existing in a life that holds this one universal truth: We will all die. Do we dare to accept this truth and look at it? Could we\, should we try? Facing our momentariness in a courageous and sensitive way\, we want to gather for a Re-emergence/Emergency Walk through Alnarpsparken\, a walk to lift the veil which obscures the values we can find if we bring death back into our lives. \n  \nBackground material\nBackground reading\, watching and inspiration is available here. \n  \n\nAdditional note:\nAs much as societies try to push death to the margins of our perceptions and life in general\, death remains a universal and yet personal topic: Death\, loss\, grief\, bereavement can mean darkness and hopelessness as we are trying to make sense of someone or something ceasing to exist. If you find yourself overwhelmed or in search for someone to talk through difficult feelings\, emotions or thoughts\, SLU’s Student Health Centre offers you support. Contact them here. \n  \n\nCEMUS invites you to a series of Re-emergence/Emergency Walks at SLU Alnarp’s campus to explore issues\, questions and unknowns central to our ability to re-imagine and re-shape human societies and culture.\n\n\nI haven’t written a single poem\nin months.\nI’ve lived humbly\, reading the paper\,\npondering the riddle of power\nand the reasons for obedience.\nI’ve watched sunsets\n(crimson\, anxious)\,\nI’ve heard the birds grow quiet\nand night’s muteness.\nI’ve seen sunflowers dangling\ntheir heads at dusk\, as if a careless hangman\nhad gone strolling through the gardens.\nSeptember’s sweet dust gathered\non the windowsill and lizards\nhid in the bends of walls.\nI’ve taken long walks\,\ncraving one thing only:\nlightning\,\ntransformation\,\nyou.\n'Transformation' by Adam Zagajewski (translated by Clare Cavanagh)\n\n\n \n \n\n  \n\nWhy?\nWe as human beings\, educators\, researchers and universities are failing in bringing about meaningful and radical (to the root causes) change – systemic changes of systems that are destroying human and more-than-human worlds. \nWe need to explore and rediscover old ideas and ways of organising resistance\, and build new spaces that can survive the present-future destruction and madness. \nThe idea is also built on and inspired by the botanical walks – Herbationes Upsalienses – that Linnaeus did around Uppsala during the 18th century\, read more here: The Linnaeus Trails.\n\n\nConcept\nThe concept is simple: before the actual walking discussion you can (but don’t have to) watch a background-video or read some texts that aim to provoke and inspire some initial thoughts\, feeling on the topic being discussed. Then we gather in Alnarpsparken in front of the castle\, walk through the park; engage in dialogue\, disagreement\, discussion two and two; find a space to gather again and switch our conversation partners; then walk back and have a conversation with someone new before we close with a final round of shared reflections.

This alternative approach to university life and knowledge democracy is already under construction. The authors of this anthology join in this respect an emerging global network of concerned scholars\, who are currently engaged in dialogue with civil society and social movements. In arguing for the transformation of research and education\, this book provides concrete examples of creativity\, innovativeness and knowledge democracy in this endeavour. This paradigmatic shift is called for against the backdrop of a generalized global crisis. The authors seek in this context to enhance the agenda\, curricula and debate on how a transformed university might help in the construction of another possible post-pandemic world built on premises of justice and peace. This book shares pertinent insights from classical authors like Dorothy Lee\, Paulo Freire and Orlando Fals-Borda\, with up-to-date innovative practices in research and higher education.Transformative Research and Higher Education\, edited by Roij\, Azril Bacal\, Emerald Publishing Limited\, 2022\nRead more about the book here: https://books.emeraldinsight.com/page/detail/transformative-research-and-higher-education/?k=9781801176958 \nRead the e-book at Uppsala University Library (for staff and students) here: https://go.exlibris.link/d6n9zy6H

SUMMARY:Jan 27 & Feb 10: Through Other Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Art at the End of the World club!\nWhen: Every second Friday\, kl. 11.30-13.30 (even weeks) \nWhere: CEMUS Library\, Geocentrum\, Villavägen 16 \nNo registration needed \nMore information: contact enki.simmons[a]cemus.uu.se and anne.thompson[a]cemus.uu.se \n\nA fortnightly\, interdisciplinary gathering for anyone who wants to creatively explore themes around humans\, nature\, and the ties between us. \n \n‘From my point of view’… has a lot of hidden implications. We think as individuals before all else. We use our own culture as a standard to which we hold others. We centre ourselves\, humans. But what if we saw the world differently? This month\, we encourage you to use art as a lens to imagine an escape from egocentric\, ethnocentric and anthropocentric worldviews. \nInspiration materials on the month’s theme will be available during the sessions and can also be found at the following links: \nInspirational materials: \n\nsuperioryouareinferior by Rae spoon (music album\, link to Spotify)\nAlgal Blooms by Jade Cuttle (music album)\nSong for the Salmon by David Whyte (poem)

SUMMARY:Jan 31: "Talking Union\, Talking Climate" screening and discussion with Vivian Price
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to an open screening of the documentary “Talking Union\, Talking Climate” and discussion with director Vivian Price!\nWhen: January 31 kl. 13.15-15.00 (15 min. screening followed by discussion) \nWhere: Room Skåne\, Geocentrum\, Villavägen 16\, see map here: https://link.mazemap.com/St0thzLk \n\nVivian Price in collaboration with Work and Labour in a Greening Economy\nTalking Union\, Talking Climate is a funny and serious dialogue between workers in the global north and south (California\, Norway and Nigeria) who share experiences about their jobs\, their labor conditions\, and thoughts on the impact of climate change on their industry. The film provides viewers a chance to rethink their ideas about workers in the fossil fuel industry\, the green shift\, and what a just transition might be. \nVivian Price is a former union electrician\, now professor and researcher on labour and climate change. She was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Liverpool\, and a Fulbright core scholar\, working with the WAGE team at the University of Oslo and OsloMet. She directed and produced several feature length award winning films and published widely on US based and international social perspectives on green transitions. This film was funded by SAMKUL\, The Research Council in Norway. \nRead more about the WAGE project here: www.sv.uio.no/iss/english/research/projects/wage/index.html \nThe three workers are Charlie Sandoval\, United Steelworkers\, California\, Kristian Enoksen\, Industri Energi\, Norway\, Orike Didi\, PENGASSAN\, Nigeria. \nGraphics by Ekekocine/IndustriALL Global Union \nVivian Price – Research\, Publications and Creative Projects\nFor the last ten years I’ve focused on how workers\, unions and communities are thinking about and acting on the transition away from the fossil fuel economy– as well as how the green economy is being imagined and shaped through policy. I’m also interested in negotiations between workers and frontline and environmental justice communities\, environmentalists\, and Indigenous groups\, and how power exerts itself in those spaces. Receiving a Fulbright Core Scholar award to teach and do research in Liverpool in 2019 and a Fulbright Specialist award to do research in Norway facilitated my ability to work internationally. \nMost recently\, in 2022\, I’ve been most involved in three international research projects. Build It Green looks at how construction training in Europe\, the US and Canada incorporates what we call “climate literacy.” That is\, in what way trainers convey an understanding not just the how of green skills development\, but also the why of climate change and the need to move towards low carbon societies. This is funded by the Canadian government through the Canadian Building Trades Unions. A second one\, Just Transition in the Defense Industry\, studies how workers in military industries in the US and the UK think about decarbonization and conversion of their workplaces towards more civilian purposes\, funded by the British Academy. I am also culminating a project I’ve worked on for four years on the views of oil workers/unions in Norway\, Nigeria\, and North America about how to address the phasing out of oil. WAGE\, Work\, Labour\, and Greening the Economy. We will be collaborating on writing together\, planning a conference and finishing up a documentary. \nRead more: https://www.csudh.edu/ids/faculty/dr-vivian-price
