SUMMARY:March 1: Call for contributions to the ClimateExistence conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:CEMUS and the Sigtuna Foundation invites you to contribute to the ClimateExistence conference August 16-18\, 2023. Call for contributions deadline March 1.\nWe encourage everyone interested to send in a contribution to the conference. This contribution can be in a variety of formats. Suggestions for art-installations\, performances\, poetry\, workshops or more traditional academic papers are all welcome. If you have ideas you would like to share with us before the contribution deadline\, we are very grateful for an e-mail with your thoughts. \nAt the conference we will focus on several different themes within the concept of ClimateExistence and the review committee will suggest where the accepted contributions might fit in. We aim at combining different kinds of contributions and merging categories. We are especially interested in the spaces\, cracks and bridges between different disciplines and expressions. \nSend in your contribution here: https://doit.medfarm.uu.se/bin/kurt3/kurt/75779 \nIn addition to written material\, feel free to include music files\, videos\, pictures or pictures of material if relevant. If you think the contribution file size is too large for e-mail\, please let us know how we can access the material in other ways (link to webpage also works). A review committee will look at all the contributions and we will get back to you after the deadline. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. \n\nHow can we embrace the dismembered world\, live meaningful lives and actively engage for better?\nHerds of ice calves leave the Arctic never to be seen again – testifying that the graphs and numbers from climate predictions are realized in the world beyond papers and projections. While humans flee war and famine\, and the political as well as the natural landscape shake beneath our feet – we meet in Sigtuna for the sixth ClimateExistence conference 2023. Having listened to the scientists we realize listening to them alone might not be enough – do we need to hear the ice howling too? \nHow can we embrace the dismembered world\, live meaningful lives and actively engage for better? What are the emotional repercussions of this climate crisis and what lies behind the graphs and numbers signaling this catastrophe? What is yet to reveal itself and how do we differentiate between the stars and satellites? \nCEMUS and the Sigtuna Foundation invite you to join us for an exciting ClimateExistence conference! We aim to be a meeting place between artists\, activists\, academics\, faith practitioners and anyone interested in the existential aspects of climate. \nWhen: August 16-18 2023 \nWhere: The Sigtuna Foundation Sweden \nHow: For more information and updates see www.climateexistence.se

This alternative approach to university life and knowledge democracy is already under construction. The authors of this anthology join in this respect an emerging global network of concerned scholars\, who are currently engaged in dialogue with civil society and social movements. In arguing for the transformation of research and education\, this book provides concrete examples of creativity\, innovativeness and knowledge democracy in this endeavour. This paradigmatic shift is called for against the backdrop of a generalized global crisis. The authors seek in this context to enhance the agenda\, curricula and debate on how a transformed university might help in the construction of another possible post-pandemic world built on premises of justice and peace. This book shares pertinent insights from classical authors like Dorothy Lee\, Paulo Freire and Orlando Fals-Borda\, with up-to-date innovative practices in research and higher education.Transformative Research and Higher Education\, edited by Roij\, Azril Bacal\, Emerald Publishing Limited\, 2022\nRead more about the book here: https://books.emeraldinsight.com/page/detail/transformative-research-and-higher-education/?k=9781801176958 \nRead the e-book at Uppsala University Library (for staff and students) here: https://go.exlibris.link/d6n9zy6H

SUMMARY:March 10: Art at the End of the World club
DESCRIPTION:A fortnightly\, interdisciplinary gathering for anyone who wants to creatively explore themes around humans\, nature\, and the ties between us. Each month has an ecological theme to guide the two sessions. During the first session of each month we create art inspired by materials on the subject\, then the second session is an opportunity to share and respond to each other’s work. Any art medium (visual\, poetry\, film\, music etc) and any level of experience is welcome. You are also free to attend any session\, even if you have not come previously. \n \n“I have a message… I was sent by the council of whales”\nHow we can listen to\, understand\, and translate the other beings that we share this planet with? Our watery kin\, such as the magnificent whales\, can seem so different from us small\, two-legged\, land-dwelling humans – yet like us they sing songs\, have accents\, memories\, families. What would it mean to translate the voices of the more-than-human\, especially those that live below the water\, so that we can hear what they have to say too? \nQuote: Lemn Sissay\, ‘Whale Translation’ \nDuring these sessions we are keen to create a safe space for exploring what can be difficult subjects. Creating with and around nature can be a joyful and comforting experience\, yet we must be mindful of the times we live in. Therefore\, we aim to cultivate a supportive and emotionally open space where it is possible for people to express eco-grief and anxiety through creativity\, while leaving room for hope. Despite the title\, your work does not have to be about the end of the world! \nInspiration materials on the month’s theme will be available during the sessions and can also be found at the following links: \nInspirational materials: \n\nWhale Translation – Lemn Sissay (poem) (video of poet reading)\nWhat the Whales Hear with Dr Kate Stafford – For the Wild (podcast)\nLunasea – Mandy Barker (visual art)\nTied to Tide – Turpin Crawford Studio (installation)

SUMMARY:NYTT DATUM 15 mars: Öppen föreläsning - Mineralutvinningens politisering under 2000-talet med Simon Haikola
At the same time\, there is a growing awareness of anthropogenic climate change and ecological destruction. This seminar will present climate justice as a framework to better understand intersections between nonreligion and ecology. How do the nonreligious conceptualize their place in a world experiencing planetary crisis? What are the various ways they construct moral relationships with other terrestrials\, human and non-human? Empirical data for this seminar is drawn from interviews conducted with settler activists\, both nonreligious and religious\, opposed to an oil pipeline project in British Columbia\, Canada. \nBio\nLauren Strumos is a doctoral candidate in Religious Studies at the University of Ottawa (Canada). Her research explores how settler activists conceptualize their opposition to an oil pipeline project in the province of British Columbia\, Canada. Her other research interests include veganism and human/non-human animal relations. Lauren is a deputy editor of Nonreligion and Secularity\, the blog of the Nonreligion and Secularity Research Network\, and she was an Ian H. Stewart Graduate Fellow (2021–2022) at the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society at the University of Victoria (Canada). Lauren received a Mitacs Globalink Research Award to visit the Centre for Multidisciplinary Research on Religion and Society at Uppsala University from January to April 2023. \n\nWelcome to a three part lunch seminar series on the Environmental and Climate Humanities this spring 2023\, starting February 9!\nA collaboration between CEMUS\, Centre for Environment and Development Studies\, Uppsala University and SLU\, CRS\, Centre for Multidisciplinary Research on Religion and Society\, Uppsala University\, and Sofia Oreland\, Department of Theology\, Uppsala University. \n\nWhen: February 9\, March 16 and March 30 kl. 12.00-13.00 \nWhere: February 9 and March 30: room 22-1009\, see map here: https://link.mazemap.com/Vu1lHj8I March 16: 22-0031\, see map here: https://link.mazemap.com/k1hn0pOx (same entrance as Humanistiska teatern) \nFebruary 9 online:\nhttps://uu-se.zoom.us/j/64045889808 \nMarch 16 online:\nhttps://uu-se.zoom.us/j/67871647541 \nMarch 30 online:\nhttps://uu-se.zoom.us/j/68698681151 \nHow: We open the doors at 12.00 for mingle and bring your own lunch\, the seminar starts 12.15 with a presentation by the invited speaker followed by discussion 12.45\, and we end 13.00 sharp.\n\n\n\nFebruary 9 kl. 12.00-13.00 \nJohan Gärdebo Transition Technocracy and Populism: Reception of climate policies in Europe (in general) and among Swedish industrial workers (in particular)\nModerated by Malin Östman\, CEMUS \nSince the Paris Agreement 2015\, “just transition” have central to attempts\, and hopes\, to bridge a jobs. vs. climate-divide as part of decarbonising industrial society. But what are the imperatives for a just transition of the workforce? And what are the nationally defined development priorities for the creation of decent work and quality jobs? Through interviews with Swedish trade union representatives from Sweden’s three largest industrial emitters (steel\, petroleum refining\, cement) along with representatives at the central level\, this study illustrates contrasting interpretations of what constitutes a just transition. \nThe main tensions concern the time a climate transition is allowed to take; if policies should support local inhabitants or global concerns over climate change. These matters have become increasingly critical given the many revolts by industrial workers\, transport personnel\, and farmers\, across Europe. In this presentation\, Gärdebo describe some of the differing receptions to climate transition policies based on case studies among Swedish workers. The larger aim of the presentation is to situate receptions of climate policies in a larger discussion about attempts to govern Western societies technocratically. \nBio\nJohan Gärdebo is a historian studying climate knowledge and decarbonisation policies as these interplay in local\, national\, and transnational settings. He is currently conducting research projects detailing Sweden’s historical contributions to climate knowledge during the 1900s\, as well as conflicts surrounding contemporary climate transitions policies\, focusing in particular on industrial towns and previous industrial transitions. \nRead more: https://www.katalog.uu.se/profile/?id=N21-2415 \n  \nMarch 16 kl. 12.00-13.00 \nLauren Strumos Nonreligion and climate change through a lens of justice\nModerated by Martha Middlemiss Lé Mon\, CRS \nIn traditionally Christian countries like Canada the number of people who do not identify as religious in increasing. The major framework is his recent research article “The Process of Eco-Anxiety and Ecological Grief”\, freely available at https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/14/24/16628. What is commonly called “climate anxiety” consists of many things\, including various grief reactions\, but fundamentally it is an adaptive response in the sense of being in touch with the reality of the climate crisis. The wide range of possible climate emotions is discussed in Pihkala’s other research article from last year\, Toward a Taxonomy of Climate Emotions\, https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fclim.2021.738154/full. \nBio\nDr. Panu Pihkala (b. 1979\, he/his) is an adjunct professor of environmental theology (Title of Docent) at the University of Helsinki and a researcher in HELSUS Sustainability Science Institute. He is currently known as a leading expert in interdisciplinary eco-anxiety research. Pihkala has published two books about eco-emotions in Finnish\, along with many books about eco-theology. SUMMARY:March 24: Small Things\, Big Stories - Art at the End of the World club
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Art at the End of the World club!\nWhen: Fridays\, March 24th and 31st\, kl. 11.30-13.30 \nWhere: CEMUS Library\, Geocentrum\, Villavägen 16 \nNo registration needed \nMore information: contact enki.simmons[a]cemus.uu.se and anne.thompson[a]cemus.uu.se \n\nWelcome to Art at the End of the World club! A fortnightly\, interdisciplinary gathering for anyone who wants to creatively explore themes around humans\, nature\, and the ties between us. Each month has an ecological theme to guide the two sessions. During sessions we create art inspired by materials on the subject\, then we share and respond to each other’s work. Any art medium (visual\, poetry\, film\, music etc) and any level of experience is welcome. You are also free to attend any session\, even if you have not come previously. \n \nThe universe is made up of very small things\, but their stories can be very big. When we greet our tiny companions\, zoom in on the microscopic\, focus on the particulate – hidden worlds are revealed. Join us as we delve into the tales of small ecologies and discover their ripples into the wider ecosphere. \nEvery beam that fell on my face\nPhotons and waves\nThe paths that we’ve changed\nThey have all left a mark on this place \nDuring these sessions we are keen to create a safe space for exploring what can be difficult subjects. \nInspiration materials on the month’s theme will be available during the sessions and can also be found at the following links: \nInspirational materials: \n\nIntimacy of Lichens (sound & film)\nMarine plastic debris photography\, Mandy Barker\nflashing decaying wood\, Alma Heikkilä (installation part of A Posthumous Journey into the Future at Uppsala Art Museum)\nOrder and Chaos\, Lady Maiser (song)

SUMMARY:March 28: Ecocide Law for the Paris Agreement with Jonas Roupé & Kevin Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an open presentation\, seminar on the recent report “Ecocide Law for the Paris Agreement” with co-author Jonas Roupé\, and commentary by Kevin Anderson!\nThe seminar is hosted and facilitated by Isak Stoddard\, PhD researcher\, Department of Earth Sciences and CEMUS\, Uppsala University. \nWhen: March 28 kl. 12.15-14.00 CET \nWhere: CEMUS Library\, Geocentrum\, Villavägen 16\, see map here https://link.mazemap.com/gVZ978v2 \nOnline: https://uu-se.zoom.us/j/62708359179 Meeting ID: 627 0835 9179 \n\nAbout the report\nEcocide Law for the Paris Agreement – The role of Ecocide Law in limiting global warming\nInternational law against mass environmental destruction – a law of ecocide – enables the Paris Agreement. Forests and oceans stabilise climate and urgently need protection. The oceans are rapidly becoming the new Wild West: a lawless territory beyond national jurisdiction for mining and extraction of fossil fuels\, using methods that may cause devastation to life on Earth. Ecocide Law has an important role to play: the law would be international\, and it would require responsible practices for extraction and production. The main purpose is pre-emptive: encouraging decision makers to think twice before major decisions. \nRead the full report here: Ecocide Law for the Paris Agreement \n\n\nJonas Roupé has worked with business renewal and sustainability issues since 1995\, and with recycling and the circular economy since 2013. \nAs the founder of the Swedish advisory firm Insiktsbolaget\, Jonas works nationally and internationally as an advisor and consultant. He is recognised for his work with the network End Ecocide Sweden and Ecocide Law Alliance\, which campaigns for international law to protect ecosystems. This law will lay the foundation for a world circular economy. \nJonas holds an MSc in business administration\, a BSc in political science and degrees in engineering and psychology. He has held positions as head of Strategy\, Business Intelligence\, Head of Business Development\, Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Marketing Officer with companies like Ericsson\, TeliaSonera and Skanova and is an experienced board member. He is and has been advising Privately owned companies\, Stock traded companies\, Government owned companies\, Trade organisations and NGOs. \nhttps://roupé.com/\n\n\nKevin Anderson is professor of Energy and Climate Change\, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research\, at the University of Manchester. He was the second Zennström visiting professor in Climate Change Leadership at Uppsala University\, now visiting professor at Uppsala University and adjunct professor at the University of Bergen. Kevin is a well-known and established researcher within climate change science who engages frequently with policy-makers\, the private sector\, civil society as well as the media. He has pioneered research on carbon budgets and pathways to acceptable mitigation levels\, and worked on the technical\, social and economic interactions involved in the transformation of energy systems\, the mitigation and adaptation to climate change. \nhttps://tyndall.ac.uk/people/kevin-anderson/\, https://kevinanderson.info/ and at Twitter https://twitter.com/KevinClimate

\n  \nMarch 30 kl. 12.00-13.00 \nPanu Pihkala The process and variety of climate emotions\nModerated by Sofia Oreland\, Department of Theology \nExperienced eco-emotion researcher and “eco-theologian” Panu Pihkala from University of Helsinki will discuss important climate emotions and ways of encountering them constructively. SUMMARY:March 30: Open seminar and walk with Sarah Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to an open fika seminar and Re-emergence/emergency walk with writer and documentary filmmaker Sarah Thomas!\n \nSarah Thomas is a writer and filmmaker. Her films have been screened internationally\, and she is a contributor to the Dark Mountain journal. Her writing has also appeared in the Guardian and the anthology Women on Nature edited by Katharine Norbury. \nWhen: March 30 kl. 14.15-16.15 \nWhere: CEMUS Library\, Geocentrum\, Villavägen 16\, see map here https://link.mazemap.com/gVZ978v2 (the walk starts at kl. 15.00 outside CEMUS\, Villavägen 16) \n\nSarah Thomas published 2022 “The Raven’s Nest”: \nVisiting Iceland as an anthropologist and filmmaker in 2008\, Sarah Thomas is spellbound by its otherworldly landscape. An immediate love for this country and for Bjarni\, a man she meets there\, turns a week-long stay into a transformative half-decade\, one which radically alters Sarah’s understanding of herself and of the living world. \nShe embarks on a relationship not only with Bjarni\, but with the light\, the language and the old wooden house they make their home. She finds a place where the light of the midwinter full moon reflected by snow can be brighter than daylight\, where the earth can tremor at any time\, and where the word for echo – bergmál – translates as ‘the language of the mountain’. \nIn the midst of crisis both personal and planetary\, as her marriage falls apart\, Sarah finds inspiration in the artistry of a raven’s nest: a home which persists through breaking and reweaving – over and over. \nWritten in beautifully vivid prose The Raven’s Nest is a profoundly moving meditation on place\, identity and how we might live in an era of environmental disruption.https://sarahthomas.net/the-ravens-nest/

SUMMARY:March 31: Small Things\, Big Stories - Art at the End of the World club
