SUMMARY:Stories in the Ice - Art at the End of the World club
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Art at the End of the World club!\nWhen: Fridays December 8th & January 19th. 11.30-13.30 \nWhere: CEMUS Library\, Geocentrum\, Villavägen 16 \nNo registration needed \nMore information: contact enki.simmons[a]cemus.uu.se \n\nIce has become a central narrative of climate change. We hear scientists talk about it all the time: receding ice sheets\, melting glaciers\, and the rising sea levels that come as a result. Or perhaps friends and family have told us memories of ice skating on lakes and ponds that never freeze anymore\, or mountains that no longer see snow. But what about the ice itself? Still and silent\, creaking and crashing\, ancient and fresh\, ice has many of its own stories to tell. \nPlease bring warm clothes\, as we may go outside for a short while! \n  \nAEW club is a fortnightly\, interdisciplinary gathering for anyone who wants to creatively explore humans-with-nature in our changing (ending?) world. Each month has an ecological theme to guide the two sessions. During sessions we create art inspired by materials on the subject\, then we share and respond to each other’s work. Any art medium (visual\, poetry\, film\, music etc) and any level of experience is welcome. You are also free to attend any session\, even if you have not come previously. \nDuring these sessions we are keen to create a safe space for exploring what can be difficult subjects. Creating with and around nature can be a joyful and comforting experience\, yet we must be mindful of the times we live in. Therefore\, we aim to cultivate a supportive and emotionally open space where it is possible for people to express eco-grief and anxiety through creativity\, while leaving room for hope. Your work does not have to be about the end of the world! \nInspirational materials on the month’s theme will be available during the sessions and can also be found at the following links: \nInspirational materials: \n\nLibrary of Ice by Naomi Campbell (non-fiction\, autobiography\, travel writing. Available in UU library)\nThe Singing Glaciers of Svalbard by Sam Kinchin-Smith (essay)\nIce Watch by Olafur Eliasson (land art\, sculpture)\nCandle Ice by Carmen Braden (sound art\, music)\nEvaporation by Jana Winderen (sound art)\nAntarctica the Woman by Stephanie Krzywonos (essay)\nVoice of the Iceberg by Joseph Michael (audio documentary)\n\nRead about previous art club themes and materials used

SUMMARY:Open CEFO seminar with Panu Pihkala: "Ecological grief and Experiences and insights from Finnish projects"
DESCRIPTION:Warmly welcome to an open CEMUS Research Forum\, CEFO\, seminar with Panu Pihkala\, adjuct professor of environmental theology in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Helsinki on ecological grief and Finnish projects!\nWhen: January 30 at 13.15-15.00 \nWhere: Baltic Library\, Geocentrum\, Villavägen 16\, see map here: https://link.mazemap.com/RfksggEB \nOnline: https://uu-se.zoom.us/j/66569880688 \n\nSeminar topics\nThe seminar will focus these two sections: \n1) Ecological grief\nPanu Pihkala’s recent research article discusses many types of loss and grief in relation to ecological issues. The graphical abstract helps to see some main themes. I argue that understanding the nuances and variations helps people to engage constructively with ecological grief. \nRead more here: Ecological sorrow: Types of grief and loss in ecological grief (TOC) \n2) Experiences and insights from Finnish projects\nProjects around eco-emotions\, such as the following: \na) Toivoa ja toimintaa (Hope and Action)\nProject about participatory action and eco-emotion activities for young people. We worked mainly with upper levels of comprehensive school (yläaste) and highschool teachers & youth\, but the materials can be used with people of different ages. https://toivoajatoimintaa.fi/ (in Finnish) \nb) Eco-anxiety project in social and health sectors\nFunded by the Ministry of Social and Health matters\, this multi-year project has produced many kinds of resources and activities. The current focus (2023-2024) is on educational institutions and students. www.ymparistoahdistus.fi See the English summary at\nSupport for distress associated with climate change in Finland – “The mind of eco-anxiety” \nc) Ilmastoajatuksia (“Climate thoughts”) project in youth work.\nI just wrote a book chapter where I discuss this\, and more broadly the theme of how to engage with climate emotions in youth work\, to the EU Youth Partnership series. Ilmastoajatuksia – Opas nuorisotyön ilmastokasvatukseen (in Finnish)\n\nBiography\nDr. Panu Pihkala (b. 1979) is an adjuct professor (title of docent) of environmental theology in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Helsinki. His interdisciplinary research deals with the psychological and spiritual dimensions related to environmental issues and especially climate change. Pihkala has become known as an expert in eco-anxiety. He is also affiliated with HELSUS Sustainability Science Center. \nAfter publishing several academic articles on the theme\, Pihkala’s first book on eco-anxiety was published in Finnish in October 2017 (“Päin helvettiä? Ympäristöahdistus ja toivo”) and it raised much public discussion in Finland. Pihkala was awarded the National Prize for Adult Education (Sivistyspalkinto) in 2018 by The Finnish Lifelong Learning Foundation (Kansanvalistusseura). Pihkala’s second book on the topic\, “Mieli maassa? Ympäristötunteet” (“Environmental emotions”)\, was published in October 2019. \nRead the full biography and see publications here: https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/en/persons/panu-pihkala
