60 billion liters of toxic waste was released into water sources in the Ecuadorian Amazon rain forest by the oil company Chevron (then Texaco) during 1967 to 1997. Today 95% of the soil in the area is destroyed because of the emissions, crude oil continues to leak from hundreds of abandoned pools and the local communities live with an increased risk of cancer and other health issues.
Join us for a movie screening depicting the story of these communities and their decades-long fight for justice. While Chevron hired over 2,000 lawyers to defend itself, the organization fighting back, UDAPT, had just three. After the film, there will be a unique discussion with one of them, Pablo Fajardo.
In a world where the power of companies is ever increasing and the laws to hold them accountable for their actions are continuously weakened, UDAPT’s victories and struggles are important to highlight. Come, learn and discuss!
