The Faculty of Science and Technology is moving forward with a proposal to discontinue CEMUS as early as January 2028. The final decision rests with Uppsala University’s board Konsistoriet. Here’s a statement by CEMUS staff and students on this proposal.
We strongly oppose the proposal to discontinue CEMUS. Closing the centre would dismantle a globally recognised environment for student-led, interdisciplinary sustainability education that bridges academia and society, empowers students, and inspires educators and scholars.
Recent evaluations highlight the high quality, impact, and relevance of the centre. CEMUS also plays a vital role in the university’s internationalisation by attracting international students and working with universities from all over the world.
Given these far-reaching consequences, the process so far has moved at an unjustifiable pace without transparent assessment of alternatives or sufficient opportunity for meaningful student involvement. At a time when universities must engage with pressing societal challenges, we urge Uppsala University to reconsider and explore ways to preserve and develop CEMUS.
Our current courses and activities continue, and we remain committed to our students, mission, and partners. Student participation has always been at the heart of CEMUS, and students must have a voice in its future. We encourage everyone to stay informed and take part in the conversation.
